Chutes & Ladders: Why Your Next Role Should Matter More than Your Title
Published 29.04.2025
Remember playing the childhood game "Chutes & Ladders"? One minute you were climbing your way to the top, and with a quick roll of the dice, you were sliding down a level—or two—the next. Honestly, it's a pretty spot-on metaphor for most careers these days.
Ambition is great—but let's face it, titles aren't everything. Sure, I've been lucky enough to hold senior roles like General Manager, Operations Director, and Managing Director, but that doesn't mean I'm automatically entitled to a similar role now, especially considering the current state of the hospitality industry.
Honestly, it's not the title that excites me; it's the actual role, the culture of the company, the people I'll be working alongside, and how that company is evolving. After all, you can be a Managing Director somewhere and still be pretty miserable. Does that automatically qualify you for another top-tier title? Probably not.
When thinking about my next career move, there are plenty of factors far more important than what's printed on my business card:
Where is the company heading? Does it have ambitious plans for growth?
What's the scale or value of the operation? Being General Manager of a £5 million business isn't the same experience as managing one valued at £20 million.
Most importantly, do I genuinely look forward to going to work each day?
Right now, I'm honestly more excited about the possibility of joining a team that's growing, evolving, and filled with passionate people, where my experience can genuinely make an impact.
Leadership isn't about your title; it's about your actions. If I can support the team, make a meaningful contribution, and keep learning—that’s what success looks like to me. I’m grateful for any role that allows me to do exactly that.
Staying humble, patient, and positive might not always come easily, but it’s crucial. Instead of chasing after titles, I’m focused on adding real value wherever I land.
Mentorship continues to be important to me—both learning from others and offering my insights. That meaningful exchange happens regardless of job title and is one of the things I love most about our industry.
Bottom line: I'm happy to contribute, to be part of something exciting, and to help drive success—whatever my title may be. Because at the end of the day, the best roles aren't defined by status; they're defined by the impact you have.
